What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a type of psychotherapy that guides the patient to reach a trance-like state. Other terms used to describe it are ‘guided hypnosis’ or ‘hypnotic suggestion’. The therapy helps the patient to get detached from the external factors and focus on their inner-self.

It is an effective aid for treating mental issues, such as phobias, depression, anxiety and stress. Sometimes it is also suggested for managing pain, weight loss, and other issues.

The study of this therapy for its therapeutic uses began in the 1700s but did not gain credibility in scientific terms until recently. The researchers have further studied this therapy to determine how it can treat mental conditions, and how effective it is for the patients.

How is Hypnotherapy used?

During the hypnosis process, the patient reaches such a state of mind that his/her sense of consciousness heightens. The patient’s mind is more focused, has increased suggestibility and is deeply relaxed. The heightened sense of the patient’s mind helps the patient to focus on the problems. It is a tried and tested therapy and the technique cause no harm to the person.
Hypnotherapy uses the following techniques:

Relaxation: Hypnosis leads to a deep, and relaxed state of mind. The therapist helps the patient reach peacefulness. Even while facing an object or factor of your fears, the patient remains calm and collected.

Suggestion: While in a state of trance, the therapist tries to give small suggestions. They may help the patient to overcome fear and other issues. For example, you may be taught to see yourself as a confident person while facing a fearful situation. Thus, learning to rely on yourself and tackle difficult times.

Coping skills: Learning cognitive-behavioural methods, such as guided imagery, is a part of this technique. These skills are helpful when overcoming anxieties and fears.
Exploring past experiences: Encouraging you to share memories related to your fears is also practised. For example, the first time the patient felt anxiety or fear.

Treatment without medicine is possible through hypnotherapy. It is also helpful for changing problematic behaviour, for example, sleep disorders or anxiety, etc.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy

The benefits and effectiveness of hypnotherapy can vary from person to person. Some patients might have a dramatic change, while others may acquire relaxation and peacefulness. The benefits of this therapy are listed below:

Focus: Various thoughts run inside the mind of an individual. There are thoughts about finances, marriage issues, and relationship troubles etc. Overthinkers have difficulty in controlling their thought process. It gets difficult to focus on the inner-self with our modern and busy lifestyle. The therapy session helps you break through these day-to-day concerns. It also helps to get you focused on yourself. This effect alone makes hypnotherapy, the best alternate therapy for depression, stress, and anxiety.

Awareness: During the hypnosis process, some patients remain fully aware. They recall everything and can communicate under hypnosis. Other patients might experience deep relaxation, and they might feel detached from what is happening.

The patient can be unaware of certain issues that cause trouble. The therapist helps find them and suggests coping mechanisms. The patient gets an increased sense of awareness about themselves.

Coping with Depression: Hypnotherapy is believed to be a permanent solution for psychological issues, as it helps cope with depression. It helps control the feelings of stress and sadness that lead to depression. The patient is more receptive to the suggestions given by the therapist. Thus, overcoming and coping with depression gets easy.

Coping with Anxiety: Hypnotherapy guides a patient to a relaxed state. During this state, the person relives the fear that triggers anxiety and overcomes it. The therapist offers small suggestions during hypnosis to treat anxiety. With practice, overcoming anxiety gets easier.

Other than the above benefits, hypnotherapy helps with the following issues:

In the Journal of Affective Disorders, the results of a study in May 2021 found out that hypnotherapy was not less effective than CBT in treating mild to moderate depression. The results showed that where CBT led to a 38.5% reduction in symptom severity, hypnotherapy resulted in a 44.6% reduction.
