Social Media Vs Suicidal Media
Two days ago I read the news that a young man named Sameer Gaikwad committed suicide. After getting some information, it was learned that this young man is famous on Tiktok and instagram. What could have happened to commit suicide at just 22 years of age? Such a question is always asked by common people. Then we are free to put a label on his suicide. There may have been a love affair etc …
Today we will learn the reasons for this in the context of psychology. Today’s young generation is using mobile a lot. We are not aware that we are living in a virtual world. There are children who use mobile 12/14 hours a day. You may not realize that you are addicted to mobile. Scientifically speaking, mobile addiction is like taking 1 gram of cocane every day, which means that if one person is addicted to mobile and another is addicted to cocane, both produce the same amount of dopamine.
Let us understand the mechanism of action of dopamine, so that we can solve all the questions very easily. Suppose I have 1 Instagram account and I posted 1 video on it and if I get 1000 likes then I will be very happy. That means my dopamine level will go up to 100. Then I posted another video and I would be happy if he also got 1000 likes but not much. Because this time my dopamine level will increase to 75. Why did it happen? It was a new experience when we first met 1000 likes. The second time the experience got older, the dopamine did not increase. This means that likes are needed to increase dopamine. I mean, my dopamine will go above 100 only if the next video gets 5000 likes. And I will be very happy. And if you don’t get that many likes, then dopamine is less and happiness is less.
Silicon Valley based experts are always trying to increase your dopamine with the help of technology and content. They are constantly sending you happy, surprising and exciting data to your mobile. And this is where we fall.
All the happiness you are looking for is found in your phone, computer and the moment you step out of your mobile, into the outside world (e.g. school, college, office, family) you realize that the outside world is very boring, depressing and frustrating.
There is nothing in this daily life that will increase my happiness, excite me, and constantly give me something new.
One more thing is that our brain starts comparing the inner world of mobile and our daily life, and this is where we start going into depression. Our brain begins to show many deficiencies in ourselves and in life. Gradually we begin to fall alone. Relationships start to get affected, everything starts to feel negative, you start to feel like no one understands you. And because of this we turn on our mobile again and find our happiness in it. And this vicious cycle of negativity continues to grow. There is no way out of this and we tend to commit suicide.
In this case, we can easily get ourselves and others out of this trap with the help of a psychiatrist, a hypnotherapist. And our life can be filled with happiness, peace, joy.
